Bolt, the popular ride-hailing platform, recently announced the removal of over 5,000 drivers from its service in 2023 as part of a major database cleanup. The company is continuing this initiative in 2024, using a driver score system that evaluates driver performance based on metrics such as trip acceptance rates, ride completion, and passenger feedback.
Lola Masha, Bolt’s regional manager for North and West Africa, explained that this scoring system ensures the platform maintains high standards of service. However, not all drivers are pleased with the system. The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUTON) has expressed concerns, arguing that the score system creates unnecessary pressure on drivers, which may negatively affect their performance.
On a positive note, Bolt has committed €100 million ($107 million) to improving the safety of both drivers and passengers in Nigeria. This investment will fund new safety features such as a four-digit trip pickup code and a trip counter, as well as initiatives to prevent accidents, improve customer support, and promote public safety.
