Africa’s youthful population holds immense promise for the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, yet the continent has largely been relegated to low-skill tasks like data annotation. A new African startup, JADA, is on a mission to tap into the continent’s vast pool of talent and address the global shortage of AI professionals.

Founded by Massimiliano Spalazzi, former Jumia Nigeria CEO, and Olumide Soyombo, a seasoned tech entrepreneur, JADA aims to train and upskill data analysts and scientists to meet the growing demand for AI expertise.

A New Approach to AI Talent

JADA is not just another tech initiative. The startup offers businesses a twofold advantage: access to untapped talent pools across Africa and freedom from complex labour regulations. By prioritising experienced data professionals, the company ensures its recruits can handle high-impact projects from day one.

The startup recently secured $1 million in funding to fuel its ambitious plans. With this investment, JADA will focus on selecting and training talented individuals, equipping them with the necessary skills to excel in the competitive AI landscape ethically.

Building on Experience and Expertise

The startup’s leadership team, consisting of experienced industry experts, is committed to nurturing top-tier talent. To address the global shortage of AI skills—highlighted in Google’s 2024 Data & AI Trend Report, which states that 54% of digital leaders face critical gaps—JADA has devised an intensive training programme. Selected candidates undergo a rigorous four-month course, during which they receive stipends.

“We are betting big on an AI workforce out of Africa—one that can build for the world, starting here,” says Soyombo, a founding partner at JADA.

By partnering with JADA, businesses can access a wider talent pool, reduce costs, and benefit from the unique perspectives and problem-solving abilities of African professionals.

We are building an academy that is designed to select and develop world-class talent,” says Piero Trivellato, CEO of JADA. “Our goal is to fill the data & AI talent gap by identifying and upskilling professionals who can be the right arm for businesses pursuing data and AI transformation.”

Global Reach with an African Focus

Operating out of Lagos, JADA plans to serve clients in Europe and the Middle East. Its revenue model relies on commissioned projects, and its cohorts are tailored to meet specific client needs, including language and geographical requirements.

Our competitive edge lies in cost, language, geography, and above all, talent,” said Spalazzi. For now, JADA is focusing on Nigeria but has plans for expansion. According to Trivellato, “Our geographical growth will mirror the demands of our clients, ensuring we deliver the right talent, wherever needed.”
