Zambia is taking a significant step towards empowering its social media content creators by proposing a bill to monetize social media content. This move follows the lead of other African countries, such as Kenya, which have successfully negotiated deals with social media giants for fair compensation.
Local legislators believe that monetizing social media content can significantly boost Zambia’s GDP. They envision a future where Zambian content creators can generate substantial income from their online presence.
Romeo Kang’ombe, a Member of Parliament from the ruling United Party for National Development, expressed strong support for the proposal. He emphasized the potential for Zambian content creators to achieve financial success through social media platforms.
“Money has to start moving from the books of Facebook to our content creators,” Kang’ombe said. “Money has to start moving from whoever owns TikTok to our young people, because this is happening in other countries.”
