AltSchool, the fast-growing African edtech startup, has announced its expansion into Europe, marking a pivotal moment in its journey to empower learners globally. The announcement was made during the SuperCharger Ventures Demo Day on December 2, 2024, where AltSchool highlighted its commitment to creating accessible learning pathways beyond Africa.
A Step Towards Global Impact
With a footprint in over seven African nations, AltSchool’s expansion into Europe reflects its vision of bridging the gap between talent and opportunity. CEO Adewale Yusuf encapsulated this mission, stating, “At AltSchool, we believe that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Expanding to Europe allows us to bring this vision to a region facing its own unique challenges in the workforce.”
Europe has already shown interest in AltSchool’s offerings, with the UK ranking as its third-largest market by registered users, trailing only Nigeria and Kenya.
Leveraging SuperCharger Ventures
Participation in the SuperCharger Ventures accelerator, one of the world’s largest edtech-focused programmes, has provided AltSchool with essential mentorship, resources, and partnerships to scale its impact further. This support is expected to bolster its operations in Europe while continuing to strengthen its influence across Africa.
Expanding Learning Models
AltSchool’s European operations will introduce a hybrid model, unlike its primarily online structure in Africa. Malta will serve as the hub for in-person engagements, with initial programmes focusing on high-demand fields such as cloud engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science.
Since its inception in 2021, AltSchool has enrolled over 100,000 students in courses spanning engineering, business, creative industries, and cybersecurity. In addition to its individual learning programmes, the startup is also exploring business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C) models to enhance its revenue streams.
Certifications have been a cornerstone of AltSchool’s strategy to provide tangible value to its learners. The startup achieved full accreditation from the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC) in February 2024. AltSchool is now working with the Maltese Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation to secure similar recognition for its programmes in Europe.
Though it doesn’t guarantee job placements, AltSchool remains committed to helping its graduates secure employment through its dedicated career team. Yusuf emphasised that the organisation continuously develops initiatives to connect students with opportunities post-graduation.
The Road Ahead
AltSchool’s move into Europe is not just an expansion but a significant step towards reshaping global education. By combining its successful African model with a hybrid approach tailored to European learners, the startup aims to address workforce challenges across continents while fostering innovation and growth.
