Nigerian users of Starlink’s satellite internet service are grappling with a sharp rise in subscription fees. In an email to its customers, the company announced that from January 27, 2025, new pricing will apply. Subscribers currently on the service will see the increased fees reflected in their upcoming bills, while new customers must pay the adjusted rates immediately.
The new structure marks a significant hike, with the entry-level subscription fee jumping from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month. For mobile global roaming users, the cost will now soar to an eye-watering ₦717,000 monthly.
According to Starlink, these changes are essential to sustain and improve service quality. The email to users stated, “To continue enhancing the Starlink network and provide reliable, high-quality service across Nigeria, we are adjusting our monthly subscription prices. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to improve your experience with Starlink.”
This isn’t the first time Starlink has attempted to increase prices in Nigeria. A similar move in October 2024 was blocked by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which required regulatory approval for any changes. However, the NCC recently signaled its intention to approve telecom tariff hikes in early 2025, aligning with Starlink’s new pricing timeline. This policy shift could have been a result of the commission’s decision to carry out a dominance study in the sector.
The broader Nigerian telecom industry has long pushed for tariff adjustments to offset rising operational costs. Local operators, burdened by inflation and a weakening naira, have faced hurdles in gaining regulatory approval. Starlink’s price hike, coupled with the NCC’s anticipated policy shift, suggests that 2025 could usher in widespread changes across the sector.
For consumers, increasing cost of internet access in Nigeria is concerning as it could potentially deepen the digital divide, with other telecoms companies also looking to hike their subscription costs as well.
