The Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC), a black-owned South African investment firm, is calling on black-owned businesses to apply for funding through its Khulisani Ventures fund. Launched to empower innovative startups, this initiative is set to provide a major financial boost to high-growth enterprises.

MIC, established in 1995 by the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT), has spent three decades building a sustainable asset base to benefit workers in the mining, energy, and construction sectors. True to its mission, the company has allocated ZAR300 million (approximately $16.5 million) to support early-stage enterprises that demonstrate scalability, innovation, and strong governance structures.

Supporting Innovation in South Africa

Khulisani Ventures was unveiled in 2021 as a game-changer for startups. It specifically targets businesses offering groundbreaking products or services that challenge traditional markets, enhance efficiency, or address South Africa’s pressing challenges with creativity. However, the fund explicitly excludes investments in primary agriculture and extractive industries.

Applications for the Khulisani Ventures fund are open until the end of January 2025, with funding disbursements expected to begin in March. MIC’s focus remains on businesses that combine innovation with the potential for high-impact growth.

According to MIC, “Our aim is to nurture black-owned enterprises that can transform industries and create lasting solutions for South Africa’s economy.”

A Legacy of Empowerment

Since its inception, MIC has maintained its commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. This fund marks another step in its ongoing efforts to address economic disparities and promote entrepreneurial success among black-owned businesses.

For entrepreneurs ready to disrupt their industries, Khulisani Ventures presents an unmissable opportunity. The question is: could your business be the next big thing to shape South Africa’s future?
