Smart Africa, a pan-African alliance focused on digital transformation, has unveiled the Africa AI Council, a body designed to spearhead AI adoption and innovation across the continent. This new initiative is set to redefine Africa’s role in the artificial intelligence (AI) space.
Bringing together 15 experts from government, industry, academia, and civil society, the Council aims to create policies, foster AI-driven solutions, and position Africa as a key player in the global AI ecosystem. “Artificial intelligence has the power to transform economies and uplift societies,” said a Smart Africa representative. “Through collaboration and policy development, we can ensure Africa is not left behind in this digital revolution.”
AI as a Tool for Economic Growth.
Africa is looking to integrate AI into key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and finance. By leveraging AI-powered solutions, the continent could see significant boosts in productivity and job creation. However, challenges remain. Limited digital infrastructure, a shortage of AI professionals, and concerns over data privacy have slowed widespread adoption. The Africa AI Council plans to tackle these issues by investing in AI infrastructure, expanding AI education, and developing ethical AI policies.
Additionally, The Council is set to collaborate with governments and universities to introduce AI-focused curricula, ensuring Africa’s next generation is equipped with the necessary skills. In addition, policy frameworks will be introduced to regulate AI usage while promoting innovation. Ethical concerns surrounding AI development, including bias and data protection, are also high on the agenda.
