Eutelsat has reached a major milestone in its mission to expand digital access, successfully connecting 1 million underserved individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa to high-speed internet—two years ahead of its initial target. This achievement fulfils its pledge to the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Partner2Connect Digital Coalition, reinforcing its commitment to bridging the digital divide.
Powered by the EUTELSAT KONNECT satellite, the company’s Konnect hotspots Wi-Fi services have provided affordable, high-speed connectivity in remote areas where traditional networks remain inaccessible. Offering speeds between 5 Mbps and 100 Mbps, the service has enabled schools, businesses, and healthcare facilities to access essential online resources, fostering educational and economic opportunities.
A Step Toward Universal Connectivity
“Reaching this milestone means 1 million people now have access to vital information, education, and communication resources through our Konnect solution. This achievement highlights our commitment to digital inclusion and underscores how we leverage cutting-edge satellite network solutions to meet the challenging demands for low-cost, high-availability, and trusted services in Africa. With both Eutelsat’s GEO satellite fleet and OneWeb’s LEO constellation, we are expanding our reach and ensuring that connectivity drives meaningful economic and social progress, empowering communities to thrive in the digital era.” said Eva Berneke, Chief Executive Officer of Eutelsat Group.
With a combination of geostationary (GEO) satellites and OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, Eutelsat continues to expand its reach, ensuring that connectivity plays a key role in economic and social development.
“Eutelsat’s achievements in satellite connectivity have been instrumental in providing reliable and affordable high-speed broadband to individuals, businesses, schools and healthcare centres in underserved regions…” stated Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of ITU.
With this rapid progress, Eutelsat is well on its way to reshaping the digital landscape of Africa, offering millions the opportunity to thrive in an increasingly connected world.
