Ethiopia is taking a bold step towards sustainable transportation with the launch of an AI-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station by Ethio Telecom. The station is designed to optimise charging efficiency while seamlessly integrating with the company’s telebirr SuperApp for digital payments.

Using artificial intelligence, the system analyses battery levels in real time and adjusts power delivery to each vehicle, ensuring faster charging and prolonged battery life. This smart approach minimises energy waste while enhancing grid stability, a crucial factor in Ethiopia’s expanding EV sector.

“Our AI-powered charging station represents a major leap in Ethiopia’s green energy transition,” a spokesperson for Ethio Telecom said.

Digital Payments and Economic Growth

A key feature of the new station is its connection to Ethio Telecom’s telebirr SuperApp, allowing cashless transactions for a seamless user experience. The SuperApp supports real-time payment tracking, automatic billing, and secure transactions, aligning with Ethiopia’s push for fintech-driven economic expansion.

The shift towards electric vehicles is also reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, helping stabilise Ethiopia’s economy by cutting fuel import costs. Additionally, the EV industry is creating new jobs in manufacturing, maintenance, and tech innovation.

With Ethiopia recently opening an EV factory in Debre Berhan, backed by a $52 million investment, the country is clearly committed to expanding its electric vehicle ecosystem. But will this be enough to accelerate nationwide adoption?
