Substack Lures Creators with New Video Monetisation Feature

Substack is stepping up its game for content creators. The platform has introduced a new feature allowing users to upload and monetise video content directly from its app, providing an additional revenue stream for creators.

Previously, video sharing was only possible via Notes—Substack’s microblogging tool—but Notes lacked essential features such as paywalls and subscriber notifications. With this update, creators can now share videos as full posts, ensuring they reach their audience while earning from their content.

Substack is positioning itself as a strong alternative for video creators looking to build a subscription-based business rather than relying on social media platforms with unpredictable algorithm changes. Users can track engagement metrics, including views, subscriber growth, and potential earnings from paid sign-ups.

Currently, the video feature only supports full paywalls, but Substack has plans to introduce preview options, enabling free subscribers to access teasers before committing to a paid subscription. The company is also developing editing tools and enhanced analytics to help creators optimise their content.

The push towards video isn’t new for Substack. Since 2022, the platform has encouraged multimedia content, and the strategy seems to be paying off. According to Substack, creators who incorporate video and audio content grow their revenue 2.5 times faster than those who don’t. As of February 2025, 82% of the platform’s top-earning creators are leveraging these formats.

This latest move is part of Substack’s broader initiative to attract more creators. Just last month, the company launched a $20 million Creator Accelerator Fund to support content creators transitioning to subscription-based models. Additionally, Substack recently rolled out livestreaming for all publishers, further expanding its content offerings.

With these developments, Substack is making a bold play to become a dominant platform for independent content creators looking to build sustainable businesses outside traditional social media networks.
