At MWC Barcelona 2025, the Ministry of Technology and Science of Zambia partnered with Huawei to unveil an ambitious smart village project aimed at enhancing digital transformation. The showcase, held at the government industry forum titled “Secured, Sovereign & Synergized Network-Cloud Strategy Accelerating National Digitalization,” attracted over 200 public service leaders and technical experts eager to discuss national digital transformation.
The initiative’s first smart village site was completed in July 2024, a mere 30 days after construction began. The project has already made significant strides by providing electricity and Internet access to the village, as well as facilitating telemedicine and remote learning.
According to Li Junfeng, Vice President of Huawei and CEO of Global Public Sector BU, digital transformation is critical to enhancing national capacities and improving citizens’ well-being. Speaking at the forum, he noted, “The extensive use of the DeepSeek model signifies not just a technological advancement, but also a fundamental shift in production dynamics.”
Zambia’s Vision for Smart Villages
The initiative is a significant part of Zambia’s Vision 2030, which aims to harness technology for sustainable growth and development. Felix C. Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, emphasized the human-centered approach to digital transformation. He said, “Through smart education, we are not only empowering the next generation with knowledge but also equipping them with the digital skills required to thrive in the fourth industrial revolution.”
Mutati stressed that this transformation is not merely about technological infrastructure; it’s about empowering communities, bridging inequalities, and building a future where every Zambian has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
Huawei’s commitment to digital transformation aligns with its broader vision of creating “excellent governance, better livelihood, and heightened economy” by supporting governments globally in establishing equitable and efficient digital societies.
As the smart village project takes root in Zambia, the question remains: Can this model be replicated across Africa to bridge the digital divide and empower underserved communities?
