Apple is facing legal trouble over delays in rolling out its highly anticipated Apple Intelligence features. A lawsuit filed on March 19 in a U.S. district court in San Jose, California, accuses the tech giant of false advertising, alleging that consumers were misled about the availability of AI-powered capabilities on new iPhones and other Apple devices.
The lawsuit seeks damages on behalf of customers who purchased Apple products expecting to use the promised AI features. It claims that despite Apple’s marketing efforts, users have yet to receive the generative AI tools announced last year.
“Apple’s advertisements cultivated a clear and reasonable consumer expectation that these transformative features would be available upon the iPhone’s release,” the lawsuit states. “Contrary to the defendant’s claims of advanced AI capabilities, the products offered a significantly limited or absent version of Apple Intelligence, misleading consumers about its utility and performance.”
This legal action comes as reports emerge of Apple struggling to bring its AI innovations to market. Earlier this month, the company confirmed that its AI-enhanced version of Siri will be delayed until 2026.
According to Bloomberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook has recently reshuffled key executives due to concerns over the slow progress of its AI initiatives. John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of AI, has reportedly lost Cook’s confidence in leading the development of Apple Intelligence. As a result, Mike Rockwell, vice president of the Vision Products Group, has now been tasked with overseeing the AI-enhanced Siri project.
