Zambia is set for a major digital transformation as Airtel Zambia is collaborating with IHS Towers, Africa’s leading telecommunications infrastructure provider, to expand network coverage across the country. The companies have committed $14 million to install 152 new communication towers within the next six months.
The initiative comes as Zambia’s Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) sector recorded a 17.4% growth last year, despite challenges posed by drought. Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati attributed this success to network providers’ commitment to maintaining power in existing towers.
“We will continue to engage you even more in order to exceed the 17 percent in the sector.”
Also, Mutati expressed optimism that the government’s collaboration with the private sector would drive even greater progress as more collaborative efforts are drawn up and sealed.
Bridging Zambia’s Connectivity Gaps
Specifically, the Managing Director of Airtel Zambia, Hussam Baday, emphasised that the project aligns with the company’s digital transformation strategy. The aim of the expansion is to improve network quality and coverage, particularly in underserved regions.
“We are going to expand our coverage population.”
Furthermore, Baday outlined the company’s target to increase coverage from 91.6% to 93% next year, with plans to reach 95-96% within two years.
IHS Zambia CEO, Augustine Phiri, confirmed that the rollout would occur in two phases—the first 50 towers would be deployed within weeks, followed by an additional 102 towers.
Government Welcomes Airtel Zambia Investment
The Zambian government welcomes the investment, equally recognising its potential to boost digital inclusion and enhance mobile access nationwide. The government said in its remark:
“We are excited as government that within six months we are going to add 152 towers.”
Conclusively, Mutati highlighted the importance of private-sector collaboration in accelerating technological growth in Zambia. The new infrastructure is undoubtedly expected to bridge gaps and enhance digital access for millions of Zambians, with mobile connectivity playing a crucial role in economic development,
