Instagram is taking another leap in its monetization journey with a new experiment: “locked posts.” Still in testing, the feature allows creators to restrict specific content using secret codes—only followers with the correct code can view these posts. The idea is to give creators more control, deepen their connection with fans, and unlock additional revenue streams.

This new layer of exclusivity could open doors for content creators to reward loyal followers or paying subscribers with premium content. It’s also a clear signal that Instagram is exploring more creative ways to support user engagement through personalised interactions. “Locked posts could become a gateway to deeper creator-audience bonds,” one observer noted, highlighting the strategy’s potential for fan retention.

Monetisation Tools Grow Across Africa

The locked post feature builds on earlier initiatives by Instagram’s parent company, Meta. In June 2024, Meta enabled ad monetization for creators in Nigeria and Ghana, marking a big step in empowering African influencers. Two months later, Kenya joined the list with access to in-stream ads and Facebook Reels monetization tools. These updates have opened new revenue channels for a continent bursting with digital talent.

By adding tools like locked posts, Instagram isn’t just focusing on the global North. It’s also equipping African creators to scale up their content and reward followers in unique ways. These enhancements show Meta’s shift toward helping creators earn directly within the platform rather than relying solely on third-party sponsorships or partnerships.

While the locked posts feature offers intriguing monetization opportunities, it also raises questions about inclusivity. Restricting access through secret codes could inadvertently exclude casual users or those who can’t afford to pay for extras. In an age where digital content is a major form of expression and interaction, drawing those lines could make parts of the platform feel gated. This could be greeted as a welcomed development by content creators.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
