Nigerian Airspace Management Agency Upgrades Air Travel Safety

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has taken a major step to improve Nigeria’s airspace travel safety by planning to buy new high-tech communication equipment. A NAMA team, led by its Managing Director Engr Farouk Ahmed Umar, visited the Rohde & Schwarz factory in Germany to inspect the equipment before making a purchase.

According to a statement released by Dr Abdullahi Musa, NAMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the goal of the visit was to make sure Nigeria gets top-quality equipment for better air-to-ground communication.

New Equipment to Improve Long-Range Air Communication

NAMA plans to install the Rohde & Schwarz High-Frequency (HF) transceiver in the Nigerian airspace. This advanced equipment uses smart signal processing to cut down noise and interference, which often affects traditional HF systems.

The new system will greatly improve long-distance air-to-ground communication across Nigeria. It will also solve the problems caused by the limited range of the current Very High Frequency (VHF) systems.

Once installed, the HF transceivers will cover large areas, including the Gulf of Guinea, the Atlantic Ocean, and even parts of northern Nigeria beyond the Kano Flight Information Region.

A Big Step Towards Safer Air Travel

Engr Farouk said this upgrade will boost communication in Nigeria’s upper airspace and make flying safer. He added that the move supports President Bola Tinubu’s plan to improve the aviation sector by modernizing the country’s airspace systems.

The visit also involved meetings with German officials from Rohde & Schwarz and representatives of Deo Makro Ltd, a Nigerian company that helped arrange the trip.
