Ghana's Minister of Communication

In a move to simplify one of the country’s most prolonged digital exercises, Ghana is rolling out a revamped SIM card re-registration process this June. The government promises a seamless, queue-free experience for millions of users, thanks to a digitised system designed to cut down delays and manual verifications.

Minister for Communication, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, confirmed the new strategy during his visit to Margins ID Group in Accra, where he revealed that citizens will now be able to complete their re-registration online. The platform will automate the verification process by linking personal data with the Ghana Card — the country’s national identity system.

The minister explained that this new approach would significantly reduce time spent at physical centres, which had been a major challenge in previous phases of the re-registration drive. “We are committed to ensuring that this time around, people do not have to stand in long queues or face unnecessary delays,” he said during the visit.

New Tech, Fewer Hassles

Ghana’s first attempt at mass SIM card re-registration kicked off in 2021 but hit multiple snags. Poor turnout, long queues, and privacy concerns led to several deadline extensions. Despite government efforts, many SIM cards remained unregistered — forcing network operators to deactivate thousands of lines.

Citizens had also raised issues with the previous app-based process, citing fears around data security and fraudulent activity. This time, however, the government appears to be addressing these concerns head-on by collaborating with trusted ID production firms and incorporating automatic cross-checks with the national database.

The new system will not only boost registration accuracy but also support Ghana’s broader push for digital transformation, aligning with its National Digitalisation Programme aimed at creating efficient public services.
