The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) is set to host its 16th General Assembly in Abidjan, the capital city of Côte d’Ivoire, from 18 to 20 June 2025. This gathering will centre on one pressing question: how can African media stay afloat and relevant in a rapidly changing digital world?

Under the theme “Empowering the media: what strategies for financial and technological resilience and innovative content?” the event will bring together broadcasting leaders, government officials, academics, content creators, and media experts. With digital disruption sweeping the globe, the Assembly aims to explore how African media can rise above financial constraints and keep pace with technology, all while creating fresh, engaging content.

One of the biggest topics expected to dominate the Assembly is the increasing cost of satellite broadcasting. This long-standing issue continues to weigh heavily on the budgets of broadcasters across the continent, especially those in the public sector. Participants will also examine how new digital tools can be used to reduce costs, improve content quality and reach wider audiences.

Media Professionals Eye Innovation and Recognition

More than just a strategy forum, the event will also celebrate outstanding work in African broadcasting. The AUB Media Awards 2025 will spotlight excellence in production, encouraging stations and creators to push boundaries and raise standards. According to the organisers, the awards aim to “reward excellence in African broadcast production,” boosting morale in a sector that has faced both financial and operational setbacks.

The African Union of Broadcasting, which unites both public and private radio and television stations across Africa, plays a major role in shaping the continent’s media landscape. Through initiatives like its AUBVISION content platform, it promotes the exchange of authentic African stories and voices across borders.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
