Ghana Demands 5G Rollout from NGIC by June 2025

Ghana’s Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has issued a strong warning to the Next Generation Infrastructure Company (NGIC). He said NGIC must launch 5G services by June 2025 without any more delays.

NGIC holds Ghana’s exclusive licence to build and operate 4G and 5G networks across the country. The company received this 10-year licence in 2024. No other company can offer 5G services in Ghana unless they work through NGIC. This deal is expected to last until 2034.

While speaking on “The Point of View” show on Channel 1 TV, the minister said NGIC originally promised to launch the network by May. That was during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. But after several delays, the final deadline is now June.

NGIC was launched in November 2024 and said it would work with telecom companies and internet service providers to bring 5G to Ghana. However, it has already missed several deadlines—first in December 2024, then in January 2025. Now, June 2025 is the date to watch.

NGIC Prepares 5G Sites

Reports say NGIC has already built at least 16 5G-ready cell sites. It has also cleared its core network, network operations center (NOC), and data centers with the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The company has promised to set up 350 sites by June. It plans to install 200 to 250 in Accra and 100 to 150 in Kumasi. Out of those, at least 50 sites will offer live 5G services.

Minister Sam George made it clear that he will take action if NGIC fails to meet the June deadline. “I don’t like ending contracts because it can cost the government a lot,” he said. “But if June comes and nothing changes, we will have a new conversation. All options will be on the table.”

He also reminded the public that the NCA can legally change NGIC’s licence if needed. “They can’t hold Ghanaians to ransom forever,” he added.
