The Nigerian government has officially launched its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy to drive innovation, improve productivity, and grow the economy. The launch event took place in Lagos on Tuesday during the unveiling of the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Collective Industry (NAICI).
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, led the unveiling. He explained that the strategy was developed through a partnership between the government, universities, and private companies. This joint effort, he said, helped Nigeria design a National AI strategy tailored to the country’s specific needs.
According to Dr. Tijani, the development process has also earned global attention. The government reached out to Nigerian AI researchers and experts both at home and abroad. Their contributions shaped the strategy into a model that reflects Nigeria’s challenges and strengths.
He added that the government has already started funding AI research and is working closely with private sector partners to grow the industry.
Nigeria Wants to Lead AI Growth in Africa
Dr. Tijani stated that Nigeria plans to become West Africa’s center for AI innovation. He believes the country’s large population, expanding economy, and creative workforce make it ideal for AI investment. He also said that Nigeria’s strategy could serve as a model for other African nations.
At the same time, he pointed out that Nigeria is still behind in global AI development. For this reason, he urged the government, businesses, and individuals to come together. He warned that AI might widen the gap between nations if action isn’t taken quickly.
AI Collective to Support Research and Innovation
Dr. Olubayo Akande, CEO of Data Science Nigeria, explained how the AI Collective will support the new strategy. He said the group will focus on four main areas: research, sector-specific innovation, policy development, and international collaboration.
He called on professionals and businesses across various industries—such as healthcare, agriculture, and finance—to get involved and lead efforts in their sectors. Additionally, he introduced a new platform called “Diaspora Connect.” This tool will allow Nigerians living abroad to support the country’s AI development.
Dr. Olayinka David-West, Dean of Information Systems at Lagos Business School, gave more insight into the strategy’s long-term goals. She described it as bold and forward-looking, with 12 main goals and 34 programs designed to support economic growth, education, and responsible use of technology.
She outlined the five key pillars of the AI Strategy as follows:
- Building strong digital infrastructure
- Creating a world-class AI ecosystem
- Encouraging AI adoption across all sectors
- Promoting safe and responsible use of AI
- Establishing clear governance and policy rules for AI
Through this strategy, Nigeria hopes to build a sustainable future powered by innovation, collaboration, and inclusive technology.
