Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) has announced the early retirement of its Group Chief Risk Officer, Chinedu Ikwudinma, ending a three-year stint in the role. Though unexpected, his departure comes after what the bank describes as a crucial chapter of risk leadership and financial stability.
Ikwudinma stepped into the top risk role in 2022, after joining the Ecobank Group in 2019. For the past three years, he has led the bank’s risk management strategy, helping it weather significant macroeconomic headwinds. His work ensured the organisation stayed aligned with regulatory standards while reinforcing its risk framework across operations in multiple regions.
Group CEO Jeremy Awori, while confirming the retirement, commended Ikwudinma’s impact on the leadership team. “Chinedu has been a key member of Ecobank’s Leadership team, playing a crucial role in managing the Group’s risk governance. His contributions, hard work, and commitment helped the company navigate through significant macroeconomic challenges. We thank him for his service and wish him well in his future endeavours,” Awori said in an official statement.
Leadership Changes Underway
Ecobank is currently transitioning its risk oversight responsibilities to two senior executives. Ademola Awokoya, Chief Credit Officer for Corporate and Investment Banking, and Pankaj Talwar, Chief Credit Officer for Consumer and Commercial Banking, will jointly lead the risk team in an acting capacity. Both will report directly to Awori until a permanent successor is appointed.
According to Company Secretary Madibinet Cisse, a formal announcement regarding the next Group Chief Risk Officer will be made after the selection process is finalised.
Before his time at Ecobank, Ikwudinma held several key roles across the banking landscape. He served as Managing Director of Nova Merchant Bank in Nigeria and spent more than 26 years at Citigroup. His tenure at Citi included senior roles in commercial banking, risk governance, and credit structuring in countries such as Uganda and Zambia
