The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched a new digital service known as NIN Authentication, or NINAuth, designed to offer secure and streamlined identity verification for Nigerians.
Following the rollout, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt the platform for verification and authentication purposes. This directive supports NIMC’s goal of building a reliable national digital identity database for both citizens and legal residents.
According to the Commission, “the NIMC NINAuth application is the official service for integration with the Commission’s backend infrastructure.” The platform is described as a suite of tools including web-based access, APIs, and mobile verification to facilitate data security, privacy protection, and easier access to public services.
A More Secure Approach to Public Access
The NINAuth app is available on the Google Play Store and Apple iOS Store and serves as the exclusive digital interface for NIN-based identity checks. One of its standout features is its requirement for user consent before any personal data is shared.
“It introduces a robust layer of protection, empowering individuals with greater control over their personal information,” the Commission said. The system is expected to enhance trust by giving users the ability to manage how their data is shared during Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures and other verifications.

NIMC explained that NINAuth supports a wide range of services including SIM registration, passport applications, tax filings, government interventions, and driver’s licence renewals. With its secure single sign-on solution, it promises convenience and transparency in dealing with government agencies.
In a press release signed by Mr Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the commission noted that the platform promotes real-time authentication and is key to database harmonisation across MDAs.
“The NINAuth application provides a secure, scalable, and interoperable interface for identity verification through API integration,” he stated.
Bridging Gaps in Identity Verification
Beyond security, the NINAuth platform also helps Nigeria move towards a more unified digital identity system. By acting as a central point for identity verification, the service is expected to improve public trust and data transparency while enhancing service delivery.
