OpenAI has agreed to buy Windsurf, an AI-powered coding assistant, in a deal worth about $3 billion. If completed, this will be OpenAI’s biggest acquisition so far. The deal will boost OpenAI’s strength in the growing market for AI coding tools and improve the coding features inside ChatGPT.
Windsurf, once called Exafunction and later Codeium, builds tools that help developers write, fix, and improve code using plain language. OpenAI’s move shows how serious it is about helping software developers become faster and more productive with AI.
The new deal comes at a time when developers are turning to AI to speed up software projects. OpenAI has already powered GitHub Copilot, one of the most popular AI coding tools used today. By buying Windsurf, OpenAI aims to take coding support in ChatGPT to the next level.
Before this, Windsurf raised $150 million in August 2023 at a value of $1.25 billion, with backing from firms like General Catalyst and Kleiner Perkins. The startup had recently discussed raising more funds at a $3 billion value—the same figure OpenAI is now paying.
OpenAI Expands Beyond Text Generation
This deal follows OpenAI’s earlier purchase of Rockset, a search and analytics company, in a major stock deal. OpenAI is trying to grow in areas beyond text, especially in tools for business users. Its active user base is also growing fast. In February, it hit over 400 million weekly users, up from 300 million in December.
However, OpenAI faces financial pressure. It expects to spend about $28 billion in 2025 while bringing in only $12.7 billion. To manage this, the company is looking to earn more and expand its services. Reports say OpenAI may raise to $40 billion in a new round of funding, with support from SoftBank. If successful, this could raise its value to $300 billion.
The market for AI coding assistants is booming. Experts predict it will grow from $4.3 billion in 2023 to $12.6 billion by 2028. That’s a growth rate of 24% every year. This growth is fueled by demand for faster, smarter software development.
Big tech firms are betting big on this trend. Microsoft has GitHub Copilot, while Amazon, IBM, and Google are also building AI coding tools. Startups like Anysphere, the maker of Cursor, have raised lots of money too. Since early 2023, companies in this space have raised nearly $1 billion.
By buying Windsurf, OpenAI is putting itself at the front of this trend, aiming to become the leader in AI software development.
