Nigerian inventor Oluwatobi Oyinlola has made history by developing the world’s smallest GPS tracking device. On April 27, 2025, Guinness World Records (GWR) confirmed his achievement. Oyinlola created the device in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and it measures just 22.93 mm by 11.92 mm — smaller than a paperclip.
GWR praised Oyinlola for pushing the limits of what technology can do, especially in making devices smaller and more efficient.
Nigerian Leaders Celebrate Oyinlola’s Achievement
President Bola Tinubu congratulated Oyinlola in a post on X, saying the GPS tracker can help many industries and everyday life. He described the invention as a sign of what Nigerian youth can achieve when given the chance.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, also praised Oyinlola. He said this milestone supports Nigeria’s goal of investing in local talent. Dr. Tijani added that Oyinlola’s journey — from launching an Internet of Things (IoT) startup to studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) — proves the power of innovation.
Nigerians on social media also celebrated the news. One user on X, @ken_giami, called it “a proud moment for Nigeria and Africa.” Another user, @hamoye4real, urged the government to invite Oyinlola to speak to students and inspire future inventors.
A GPS tracker uses satellites to track the location of a person or object. These devices help people find cars, phones, or even pets. Oyinlola’s invention is the smallest ever made, which means it can be used in many new ways, like inside small gadgets or wearables.
His new invention puts Nigeria on the global tech map and shows the amazing potential of young Nigerian innovators.
This milestone follows another big achievement by Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya. On April 20, 2025, Onakoya set a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, playing for 64 hours straight in Times Square, New York.
