Vitel Wireless has achieved full interconnectivity with Nigeria’s four major mobile network operators, marking a first-of-its-kind feat for a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in the country. The move enables seamless communication between Vitel subscribers and users on MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile.
With this breakthrough, Vitel Wireless not only secures its place as the leading MVNO in Nigeria but also sets a new benchmark for others to follow. The company, which was the first to receive a unique number series (0712) from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), continues to blaze the trail for the emerging MVNO market. Nigeria currently holds licences for 46 MVNOs, but none has matched Vitel’s string of firsts.
Building Bridges Across Networks
The successful interconnection was made possible through a mix of direct fibre links and indirect routing partnerships. Engineers from Vitel Wireless worked in sync with teams from MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile, as well as collaborators from Wireless Technology Labs (WTL) and Interconnect Clearinghouse Nigeria (ICN).

“We are gathering momentum for our big launch,” said Kenneth Emeka Nwabueze, MFR, Chairman and CEO of Vitel Wireless. “We are proud to be showing what’s possible for MVNOs, while also creating a path for others to follow.”
Nwabueze also acknowledged the regulatory body’s pivotal role. “We wish to thank the Nigerian Communications Commission for their timely interventions and guidance, which were instrumental in achieving this interconnectivity and bringing the formal launch of the Vitel Wireless nationwide network one step closer to reality,” he added.
Eyes Set on a July Rollout
Having entered a nationwide pilot phase in May 2025, Vitel is gearing up for a full commercial rollout in July. The company plans to introduce cutting-edge mobile services across the country, promising to extend coverage and competition in Africa’s most populous nation.
Vitel is also recognised as the first MVNO in Africa to unveil a location-aware network and to roll out a strategic national expansion plan. With its track record of innovation and deep industry roots, the company appears poised to redefine Nigeria’s telecom landscape.
