Mobile network subscribers across Nigeria are currently facing delays in SIM-related services such as new activations, SIM swaps, and replacements. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) announced that the disruptions stem from a system change ordered by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

According to a statement released on Tuesday, NIMC has directed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to switch to a new identity verification system for real-time registration. This migration process has triggered technical issues, making it difficult for telecom operators to provide essential services.

ALTON explained that this switch affects SIM registration, replacement, and Mobile Number Portability (MNP). The group admitted that the transition has created temporary service interruptions nationwide.

Currently, mobile operators cannot process new SIM activations, swaps, or replacements. ALTON confirmed, “MNOs are currently unable to support critical services due to the technical issues caused by the platform migration.”

Despite the setbacks, ALTON stressed that the new platform will eventually improve the accuracy and efficiency of identity verification in the country.

Also, the association assured subscribers that it is working closely with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to fix the issue as quickly as possible.

Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON’s Chairman, and Barrister. Damian Udeh, its Publicity Secretary, signed the statement. They apologized for the inconvenience and advised subscribers to hold off on visiting service centers for SIM services until the issue is resolved.

“We know this has disrupted communication and business for many people. We truly apologize and ask the public for patience,” the statement said.

ALTON promised to provide updates as the situation develops and reaffirmed its commitment to offering secure, reliable, and high-quality telecom services to Nigerians.
