In a move set to expand mobile access for millions, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a three-year national roaming agreement between MTN Nigeria and 9Mobile. The new arrangement will allow 9Mobile subscribers to roam seamlessly on MTN’s extensive infrastructure across Nigeria.
The announcement, disclosed to the Nigerian Exchange Group, marks a strategic partnership aimed at improving mobile connectivity and reducing infrastructure gaps. In essence, the deal enables 9Mobile customers to stay connected even in locations where their network is weak or unavailable—thanks to MTN’s broader coverage.
According to both telcos, the collaboration will improve customer experience, drive industry efficiency, and deepen mobile penetration across the country.
A New Era of Industry Collaboration
MTN Nigeria explained that the deal will enhance the sustainability of the telecom sector by reducing duplication of infrastructure and making better use of available resources.
“This agreement allows 9Mobile subscribers to roam seamlessly on MTN Nigeria’s network, fostering industry collaboration and enhancing operational efficiencies,” the statement read.
The agreement aligns with the NCC’s broader vision of a fully connected Nigeria—especially in underserved areas where telecom infrastructure remains scarce. The deal also supports more cost-effective operations for 9Mobile by giving them access to MTN’s vast network without requiring new base stations.
Commenting on the announcement, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola noted: “This agreement represents a significant step in our commitment to driving industry collaboration, improving customer experience, and supporting the NCC’s vision of a fully connected Nigeria.”
He further emphasised that Nigeria’s telecom industry needs a united front, especially in delivering large-scale connectivity. “This agreement demonstrates what we can achieve when we collaborate,” he added.
For mobile users, especially those in rural or underdeveloped areas, this could be a game-changer. With 9Mobile now able to ride on MTN’s infrastructure, more Nigerians will enjoy improved access to calls, messaging, and internet services.
