Nigeria’s major mobile networks have resumed SIM swap services following a temporary shutdown that left millions unable to access critical mobile features. According to MTN and Airtel, the outage was caused by technical issues linked to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) verification platform.
In a statement posted via its support account on X (formerly Twitter), MTN said services were now stable and back online. “SIM swaps have now resumed. We can confirm that NIMC services are fully operational and appreciate their support in the migration to a new platform for NIN verification services for the telecommunications industry,” the company shared.
The temporary breakdown had led to widespread complaints, especially from users needing to reactivate lines, retrieve lost SIMs, or port numbers. MTN apologised to affected users and advised them to visit service centres for assistance.
Network Services Back Online, but Not All Telcos Are Talking
Airtel Nigeria echoed a similar message, also via social media. “The NIMC PORTAL is up and running. We regret earlier messages suggesting otherwise,” the telco said. “We are sorry for the delay and are addressing the issue… We value our partnership with the NIMC and value your patience.”
While Glo and 9mobile are yet to issue public updates, NIMC’s official X account reposted the confirmations from both MTN and Airtel, suggesting that the service has returned across most networks.
Telecom operators are urging customers who still face issues to head to the nearest customer service centre for quick resolution.
