MTN Group has strengthened its alliance with Microsoft by training and certifying more than 1,250 employees in cloud technologies, marking the highest achievement of its kind for any Microsoft customer in Africa.
The milestone was delivered through Microsoft’s Enterprise Skills Initiative, tied to MTN’s Project Nephos, its cloud-first strategy launched in 2022. The goal is to build company-wide expertise, sharpen operations, and speed up innovation across all of MTN’s markets.
Building Africa’s Cloud Workforce
The training covered a wide range of areas including Azure Fundamentals, Data and AI, DevSecOps, Apps and Infrastructure, Security, and Data Management. Staff from MTN Nigeria, MTN South Africa, and other operating arms such as Bayobab, Chenosis, and its fintech unit also took part.
MTN’s Group Chief Information Officer, Nikos Angelopoulos, praised the rapid progress. “The pace of progress has been remarkable,” he said, adding that the skills are already strengthening technical depth and supporting digital transformation across the organisation.
Microsoft’s Role in the Transformation
Microsoft officials also hailed the development. Account Director, Alkis Flemetakis, described the effort as “an important enabler of MTN’s ambition to build digital platforms that can power Africa’s transformation.”
The telecoms giant says this is only the beginning. It plans to expand the partnership into advanced certifications in artificial intelligence, security, and modern workplace solutions, in line with its shift towards becoming a cloud-native and platform-led company.
