Starlink, the satellite internet division of SpaceX, has issued a critical update notice to a portion of its users, warning that those who fail to update their equipment before 17 November 2025 will experience service disruption or even the permanent inoperability of their device.
The company has told its affected customers that the update is part of a big network upgrade it is carrying out to strengthen security, performance, and connectivity reliability across its global service. Only users who have received an official email or in-app notification need to take action.
According to Starlink, there are two affected categories. The first comprises customers who need to plug in their Starlink terminals before the given deadline or stand to lose their terminals permanently. The other group needs to install a software update, failing which, starting 18 November, their devices will stop connecting to the internet.
“Our system upgrades are essential to keep all devices compatible with the latest network technology and ensure continued access to Starlink services,” the company said.
The notice, titled “Action Required: Plug in for critical update,” instructs users to place their Starlink terminals outdoors, plug them in, and wait for the automatic update to complete, a process that usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, users who received the “Action Required: Update Software” message can perform a quick manual update by connecting to their Starlink Wi-Fi, opening the app, and following on-screen instructions. This process takes less than a minute.
What Versions Are Affected?
Starlink states that hardware running versions earlier than 2024.05.0 will have to connect and update prior to the deadline or they will be rendered permanently unusable. Anyone with versions between 2024.05.0 and 2024.12.26 will also need to sideload the latest via a computer before November 17. Devices with versions newer than 2024.12.26 are not affected for the time being.
The company has underlined that customers do not need an active subscription to complete the update, nor will they be charged for keeping their terminals plugged in during the process.
Starlink has encouraged anyone who cannot access their terminals before the deadline to reach out to customer support immediately to avoid service loss. The move underlines the company’s commitment to maintaining a robust and secure internet network as it continues to expand across rural and underserved regions around the world. Starlink’s proactive update strategy is part of similar measures being taken by major tech firms like Amazon and Apple, who constantly release firmware updates to improve security infrastructure.
