TikTok has halted access to its late-night LIVE feature in Nigeria after a sharp rise in broadcasts linked to policy breaches. The decision was shared with Nigerian users on Monday through an in-app message, which explained that the company was carrying out a wider safety review. Although the notice confirmed the restriction, it offered no timeline for when normal access would resume.
The move followed months of concern about how the feature was being used across the country. Internal enforcement figures presented at TikTok’s West Africa Safety Summit in Dakar showed that misuse of LIVE sessions had grown steadily. During the second quarter of 2025, the platform issued warnings and removed monetisation from more than 2.3 million LIVE sessions globally. It also penalised over one million creators for breaking its monetisation policies. Nigeria contributed 49,512 banned sessions in that period, placing it among the highest enforcement totals in the region.

Reports had intensified in recent months as certain late-night broadcasts in Nigeria attracted attention for violating TikTok’s rules on mature content. Some creators attempted to use the gifting system to earn rapid payouts, which sped up the spread of these violations. The company responded by limiting LIVE access during the hours most linked with the trend.
Why TikTok Nigeria Is Tightening Its Rules
TikTok Nigeria explained that the pause is part of a broader re-evaluation of its safety tools in the country. The platform said similar temporary restrictions had been used in other regions where violation patterns increased. Yet it also stressed that the aim was to protect its community rather than limit general expression.
The company has not provided a date for restoring late-night LIVE streams. However, industry observers believe the review phase will focus on verification processes, creator accountability, and enforcement speed, as the platform works to reduce misuse of the LIVE tool.
For now, users in Nigeria can still access daytime LIVE streams as normal while TikTok Nigeria continues its review
