Lagos State is taking the lead in Nigeria’s digital transformation by developing the country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidelines. This groundbreaking initiative aims to establish a framework for responsible AI usage and development.

Olatubosun Alake, the Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, announced the development of these guidelines at the recent Zenith Bank Tech Fair. The regulations, being drafted in collaboration with the Federal AI Collective, are expected to be finalized in the first or second quarter of next year.

Alake emphasized the importance of a proactive approach to AI, stating, “AI’s impact will be felt whether we are prepared for it or not, making platforms like this essential for fostering a proactive approach.” He further highlighted Lagos State’s commitment to innovation and technological progress, noting that the AI guidelines will pave the way for responsible AI development in Nigeria.

To support AI initiatives within the state, Lagos State’s Science Research and Innovation Council is funding AI projects at local universities, including the University of Lagos and Lagos State University. This investment in academic research will contribute to the advancement of AI, blockchain, and infrastructure development in Nigeria.

Oladejo Olawunmi, Director of Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), echoed the importance of AI regulation. He stressed the need for transparency, trust, and data security in AI development and highlighted NITDA’s role in creating a robust legal framework.

NITDA is currently working on the National AI Strategy, which aims to position Nigeria as a global leader in AI. By collaborating with local and international experts, NITDA seeks to ensure that Nigeria not only keeps pace with global AI advancements but also establishes a strong regulatory environment to support long-term growth.
