Google Maps has officially turned 20, marking two decades of revolutionizing how people explore, navigate, and interact with their surroundings. The global mapping service, which now boasts over 2 billion monthly users, has played a crucial role in shaping modern travel and discovery. In a statement shared with Technext, Google highlighted the platform’s impact, stating: “Google Maps isn’t simply a map; it’s a dynamic platform shaping users’ understanding of the world. Its rich and up-to-date information empowers users to confidently navigate, wherever their journey takes them.”
Since its launch, Google Maps has expanded beyond a simple navigation tool, integrating AI-powered features such as Augmented Reality (AR) navigation, real-time business insights, and even fuel-efficient route suggestions. The app is home to more than 250 million businesses and locations, providing users with curated recommendations on places to visit, eat, and explore.
Over 1 Trillion Kilometres in Directions Provided
One of Google Maps’ most staggering milestones is the provision of over 1 trillion kilometres of directions to users worldwide. The platform also thrives on community contributions, with more than 500 million users submitting at least 100 million updates annually. These updates ensure that locations, routes, and reviews remain as accurate and up-to-date as possible. To commemorate the 20th anniversary, Google unveiled a list of top-reviewed locations in Nigeria, showcasing the restaurants, cafes, visitor attractions, parks, and museums that have resonated most with users. Some of the most-reviewed restaurants include Mega Chicken, Farmcity Lekki Lounge, Hard Rock Cafe, and Domino’s Pizza (Wuse and Yaba branches).
For visitor attractions, Oniru Private Beach, The Good Beach, and Fela’s Shrine ranked among the most popular, while parks such as Freedom Park Lagos and Millennium Park also stood out. Among museums, National Museum Lagos and Kalakuta Museum made the list.
