OpenAI has launched Deep Research, an advanced AI tool designed to handle extensive online research tasks with minimal human effort. The latest addition to OpenAI’s suite of AI agents, Deep Research aims to cut down hours of manual research into just minutes.

The tool is currently available to select ChatGPT Pro users; OpenAI’s premium plan costs $200 per month. By processing text, images, PDFs, and user-uploaded files, Deep Research can generate detailed reports on topics ranging from complex scientific inquiries to product recommendations.

This marks OpenAI’s second AI agent release this year, following last month’s introduction of Operator, an AI assistant capable of booking flights, managing grocery orders, and making online purchases.

AI Agents: The Future of Automation?

AI-powered agents are rapidly transforming the way people handle everyday and professional tasks. OpenAI, alongside tech giants like Microsoft and AI competitors such as Anthropic, is pushing toward AI systems that can complete multi-step operations with little to no supervision.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has referred to AI agents as “the next giant breakthrough” in artificial intelligence. However, competition is intensifying, with Chinese AI firms like DeepSeek reportedly making significant advancements.

Despite its potential, Deep Research is still in its early stages. OpenAI warns that the tool may generate inaccurate information and struggle to separate rumors from facts. Additionally, the service is highly compute-intensive limiting users to 100 queries per month.

What’s Next for Deep Research?

While Deep Research is currently restricted to ChatGPT Pro users, OpenAI has plans to expand access to subscribers of its Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans. However, the company has yet to announce an official rollout date.

As AI-powered agents become more sophisticated, OpenAI and its rivals are betting that automation will significantly enhance productivity across industries. Whether Deep Research will live up to that promise remains to be seen.
