Safaricom M-PESA Ethiopia, in collaboration with other financial service providers, has teamed up with Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health to roll out a digital payment system aimed at improving financial inclusion and service delivery in the healthcare sector.
This initiative will integrate M-PESA’s mobile payment solutions into health facilities, allowing for seamless cashless transactions, automated insurance payments, and timely salary disbursements for Health Extension Workers. The project’s pilot phase will be launched in select hospitals, accompanied by financial literacy training for healthcare workers and beneficiaries.
The partnership is backed by key institutions, including the National Bank of Ethiopia, the Ministry of Finance, Ethiopia Health Insurance Services, and the UNDP’s Better Than Cash Alliance. It aligns with Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation strategy, Digital Ethiopia 2025, which aims to modernise payment systems and enhance accessibility to essential services.
With M-PESA’s success in driving financial inclusion across Africa, this collaboration is set to make healthcare more efficient, affordable, and transparent for millions of Ethiopians.
