Nigerian users of Google Drive are in for a shock as Google plans to double the monthly subscription fee for its 100GB Google Drive storage plan. The price, previously set at ₦950, will now be ₦1,900, with the change scheduled to take effect on March 28, 2025.

In a notification sent to its customers, Google clarified, “The price will automatically increase to ₦1,900/month on 28 Mar 2025 for your Google One subscription. Cancel at any time in Google Play.”

This hike is part of a broader price adjustment effective from February 18, 2025, affecting several countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Why the Price Hike?

Google One offers cloud storage solutions for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, which many Nigerians rely on for personal and professional data management. However, the price hike, which effectively doubles the subscription cost, has left users questioning whether it’s worth the expense.

Although Google hasn’t explicitly stated why the prices are increasing, factors such as rising operational costs and currency exchange rate fluctuations are likely influencing the decision.

This price increase mirrors a growing trend of rising costs across Nigeria. Recently, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved tariff increases for telecom operators, which major players like MTN and Airtel have already implemented. Similarly, pay TV giant Multichoice raised the prices of its DSTV and GOtv plans by up to 21%.

What Next for Nigerian Users?

With the new pricing set to take effect soon, Nigerians who depend on Google Drive for document backup, photo storage, and other essential files are being urged to evaluate their current usage and decide whether to stick with the service or seek alternatives.

Will Nigerian users adapt to the price change, or will Google see a mass migration to other cloud storage providers?
