Google announces opening of cloud region in Johannesburg, South Africa, delivering high-performance, secure and low-latency cloud services to businesses of any size across the continent. According to projections, the African internet economy will be worth about $180 billion as of 2025 and add about 5.2% to the continent’s GDP. Google’s billion-dollar commitment to Africa’s digital future seeks to improve infrastructure, support the continent’s evolving tech workforce, and nurture a vibrant startup ecosystem.
Enhancing Africa’s Digital Ecosystem
“The Johannesburg cloud region launch is poised to add tremendous value to the African tech ecosystem, providing vital resources that enable organisations to innovate, scale, and succeed within the global marketplace. Now, with the Johannesburg region, our total spans 40 cloud regions and 121 zones — connecting Google Cloud services to over 200 countries and territories worldwide,” Google said.
“With the addition of the Johannesburg region, our network now totals 40 cloud regions and 121 zones, which together deliver Google Cloud services to over 200 countries and territories worldwide. Like all Google Cloud regions, the Johannesburg region is connected to Google’s secure network, comprising a system of high-capacity fiber optic cables under land and sea around the world. This includes the recently-completed Equiano subsea cable system that connects Portugal with Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, and St. Helena.”
Google is positioning itself as an essential player in Africa’s rapidly evolving digital landscape with the establishment of a cloud region in Johannesburg. Trained data extends up to October 2023.
