MTN Uganda, through its MTN Changemakers Initiative, has taken another step toward inclusive education by equipping St. Mary Gorreti Secondary School, Ngetta, with much-needed resources. The telecom giant donated UGX 20 million worth of assistive technology and infrastructure, ensuring visually impaired students have access to quality learning tools.
The donation includes three desktop computers installed with Braille JAWS software, specifically designed to aid students with visual impairments. Additionally, 40 desks were provided, creating 80 extra learning spaces to accommodate more students in a comfortable environment.
Commitment to Inclusive Education
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Brian Kagwisagye, MTN Uganda’s Regional Business Manager for Northern Uganda, stressed the importance of education accessibility. “Education is one of the most powerful tools for empowerment, yet many learners with disabilities face barriers. Our support ensures that no child is left behind,” he said.
This initiative is part of MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which prioritises digital and financial inclusion alongside educational support. It also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Building a More Inclusive Future
ICEF (Itinga Charity Education Foundation), the organisation behind St. Mary Gorreti Secondary School, has been at the forefront of promoting inclusive education. The school, which currently has 45 students, including 10 who are completely blind and 12 with low vision, aims to provide a supportive learning environment for all.
Acen Kevin, Executive Director of ICEF, expressed gratitude for MTN’s contribution. “This initiative significantly improves the learning experience of our visually impaired students. By introducing assistive technology and upgrading classroom infrastructure, MTN Uganda is not just addressing immediate challenges but laying the foundation for long-term inclusivity,” she noted.
Beyond this project, MTN Uganda has allocated UGX 500 million under its Changemakers Initiative to fund 25 community-driven projects nationwide. Other beneficiaries include the Bless a Child Foundation for pediatric cancer care, 40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation for education, and vocational training initiatives in Iganga and Kabarole.
