Google has laid off hundreds of workers from its Platforms and Devices division, affecting teams behind Android, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser. The layoffs happened on Thursday, according to a report by The Information, which cited a source close to the matter.
This move is part of Google’s broader plan to restructure its operations and become more efficient. A company spokesperson confirmed the layoffs, saying they followed the merger of the Platforms and Devices teams. The spokesperson also mentioned that the company had offered a voluntary exit package to employees in January 2025.
“Since we combined the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve worked on becoming more flexible and efficient. This included job cuts and a voluntary exit program we launched in January,” the spokesperson said.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned staff to expect more layoffs as the company continues to cut costs. His message came just a day after YouTube, owned by Google, laid off about 100 workers across various teams, including engineering and support services.
Google has also trimmed staff in its hardware and digital assistant teams as it shifts focus to artificial intelligence. Rising pressure from AI rivals like Microsoft and OpenAI has pushed Google to adapt quickly.
Earlier this year, Google offered U.S.-based employees in the Platforms and Devices unit a chance to leave voluntarily with severance pay. The team includes over 25,000 full-time workers who support Android, Chrome, Pixel, and Fitbit.
So far in 2025, over 27,000 tech workers have lost their jobs, according to Layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks global tech layoffs. February alone saw more than 16,000 layoffs, making it the worst month of the first quarter.
This comes after a tough 2024 when more than 150,000 tech workers lost their jobs across 549 companies. With companies still cutting costs and investing more in AI, experts expect the layoff trend to continue this year.
