Lagos State is witnessing a significant digital leap as the number of internet subscribers has soared to one million between 2024 and 2025, following the ongoing rollout of its 6,000-kilometre MetroFibre infrastructure. This announcement came during a ministerial briefing marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

Olatunbosun Alake, Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, confirmed the milestone at the Alausa press event, noting that the state’s efforts to build a smart, connected city are finally bearing fruit. “Building a digitised city will require physical infrastructure connections to improve the digital connectivity of the state,” he said. The MetroFibre initiative, according to Alake, is a crucial step towards a 24/7 digital ecosystem.

The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) has also made significant progress, registering over 6.4 million people. Of this figure, 4 million are adults, and over 2.4 million are children. Alake revealed that the long-term goal is to register 20 million residents, with 10 million expected to be captured within the next two years.

Fibre Optics, AI, and Safer Cities

Beyond connectivity, the state is also focused on smart surveillance and artificial intelligence. Intelligent Video Surveillance systems are already operational in locations such as Alapere and Bank Anthony Way. These technologies, Alake said, are designed to create a more secure environment for businesses, boost investor confidence, and ultimately increase the state’s internally generated revenue.

While praising the rapid development of artificial intelligence, Alake emphasised the need for cautious implementation. “AI is now astronomic and we know the danger in it. So, we want to ensure that when people build the AI, it is safe and takes our diversity into consideration and also makes sure it is fair,” he noted.
