The Lagos State Government is building strong partnerships to help young people succeed in agribusiness. Through the Lagos Agrinnovation Club, the state is connecting youth-led agribusinesses with government agencies, development partners, and civil society groups. These partnerships aim to improve food production and boost Nigeria’s food security.
The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems explained that the initiative helps young farmers and agribusiness owners learn new ideas and use better tools. Since the club started in 2013, more members have joined, and businesses are now exploring new areas in the food industry.
She added that these partnerships not only support business growth but also help Nigeria produce more of its food. As more young people earn a living through farming, Nigeria moves closer to a future where it can feed itself without relying heavily on imports.
The Commissioner also shared her plan to expand the model to other states like Oyo, Zamfara, and Nasarawa. She believes that if more states build similar innovation hubs, the country will see steady improvement in agriculture. Even small changes, when combined, can lead to big progress nationwide.
Agri-Thon and Global Support Strengthen Impact
In 2023, Lagos hosted the Lagos Agri-Thon, where 26 agribusinesses received over N100 million in grant support. Now, the state is talking with international partners to find more funds and grow the program further.
The Danish Consul General has also promised support. She said Denmark will continue working with Lagos to grow agribusiness across Nigeria. She praised Nigeria’s young population as a big advantage and urged the country to use this energy to create modern solutions in farming.
She shared how Denmark made farming attractive to its youth through innovation and advanced tools. Danish farms, she noted, are well-organized and efficient. Nigeria, she suggested, can follow this example to make agriculture a respected and rewarding career.
With help from both local and global partners, the Lagos Agrinnovation Club is laying the foundation for a new generation of youth-led farms and agribusinesses. The goal is clear: transform Nigeria’s food system and build a stronger, more sustainable agricultural future.
