The AI for Equity Challenge, organized by the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) and African data science platform Zindi, drew over 1,300 participants from 90 countries. Competitors tackled pressing issues in disaster relief and public health, with African institutions setting the stage for innovation. Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania and Kuyesera AI Lab in Malawi defined the challenge’s technical problems. Winners, including Yisak Berhanu from Ethiopia and Mark Landry from the USA, showcased AI’s potential to solve real-world crises.
Challenge Targets Climate and Health Solutions
The AI for Equity Challenge encouraged participants to create AI tools addressing climate change, gender inequality, and public health. African AI talent shines through the leadership of Sokoine University, which framed the “Outsmarting Outbreaks” task. This challenge focused on predicting waterborne disease outbreaks in Tanzania, a problem disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Kuyesera AI Lab challenged teams to detect damaged infrastructure using aerial imagery, aiding disaster recovery efforts. With AWS providing cloud computing resources, participants logged over 63,000 hours building models. The event aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing ethical AI solutions.

His LightGBM-based solution predicts disease outbreaks, offering hope for Tanzania’s health system. “I want to see this tool help communities directly,” Berhanu stated.
