OpenAI has announced a new ChatGPT feature that could upend how meetings are managed, by introducing live audio recording and automated transcription. Revealed on Thursday, the tool will allow users to document meetings within the app and generate detailed summaries, positioning ChatGPT as a direct challenger to Microsoft Teams’ Copilot.

The AI-powered “Record” feature is designed to operate as an overlay, rather than a direct integration with platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Once activated, it captures both audio and on-screen activity, converting speech to text in real-time. Users will be able to pause, resume, and manage recordings as needed. A “drag to talk” control makes participation more seamless, although the feature will require microphone and audio permissions, with consent prompts baked in to ensure ethical use.

This tool aims to simplify workflows by removing the need for manual note-taking. Instead of relying on third-party transcription software and manually summarising discussions, ChatGPT will now do it all natively—offering instant transcripts, summaries, and action items that users can share easily.

A Seamless Shift from Notes to Nuance

Up until now, users had to juggle multiple tools—recording meetings on one platform, then feeding transcripts into ChatGPT for analysis. This process was not only time-consuming but also prone to errors and inconsistencies. OpenAI’s new feature changes that entirely.

We’re revolutionising meeting productivity by embedding transcription and summarisation directly within ChatGPT,” a company representative said at the launch.

With this update, users will be able to choose how in-depth the summaries should be—whether they’re looking for general updates, project-specific insights, or action points. Once processed, ChatGPT will deliver clear meeting minutes and follow-up tasks in digestible formats.
