The Federal Government has confirmed that commercial banks will begin enforcing a mandatory Tax Identification Number requirement for all taxable Nigerians from 1 January 2026. The move marks a sharper turn in the country’s tax compliance drive as authorities attempt to widen the national tax net and reduce long-standing gaps in documentation.

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, explained the new deadline during a recent media conversation later shared on his X account. He noted that the updated mandate draws its authority from Section 4 of the Nigerian Tax Administration Act, which comes into fully effect on the same date. According to him, the rule makes it compulsory for anyone earning income through a trade, business or similar activity to obtain a valid tax ID. “A taxable person is anyone who earns income through trade, business, or any economic activity. So banks must request a tax ID from taxable persons,” he said.

Why the TIN rule is returning with more force

The requirement is not entirely fresh. It first appeared in the 2020 Finance Act, yet the framework lacked the legal strength needed for consistent application across the banking system. With the NTAA now providing direct backing, officials believe enforcement will be uniform in 2026 and less prone to loopholes. Oyedele said that banks will be expected to check for a TIN before allowing taxable account holders to continue everyday banking.

He also clarified that the regulation does not target Nigerians without income. Students, dependents and similar categories will be allowed to keep their bank accounts without registering for a TIN. However, he warned that failure to comply for those who fall under the taxable bracket could lead to restrictions in accessing or operating their accounts. He added that holders of existing TINs do not need to apply for new ones under the updated rules.
