Google has unveiled a major push to strengthen Nigeria’s presence in the global artificial intelligence space. Through its new Build with AI initiative, the tech giant will train 1,000 developers in the skills needed to create innovative, locally relevant, and globally competitive solutions.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with GOMYCODE, a digital education company focused on equipping people with in-demand tech skills. Applications are open nationwide, with participants set to take part in an 11-week blend of hands-on lab work and in-person learning at GOMYCODE’s hacker spaces.
Closing the AI Skills Gap
John Kimani, Google’s Head of Developer Ecosystem in Sub-Saharan Africa, said the initiative comes at a time when Nigerian industries are turning to technology to solve pressing challenges. “Our collaboration with GOMYCODE is about more than just training; it’s about empowering this community with the tools and expertise they need to build the future,” he said.
Kimani added that developers will have access to advanced AI tools such as Gemini, along with guidance from Google experts. The curriculum will focus on solutions for fintech, healthtech, and agritech, placing Nigerian developers in a prime position for Africa’s wider digital transformation.
Innovation Built for Nigeria and Beyond
Babatunde Olaifa, Country Director for GOMYCODE, said the programme will give Nigerian tech talent both the infrastructure and the local support they need to excel. “We are creating an environment where innovation can thrive, and we are incredibly excited to see the solutions that will emerge from this programme built by Nigerians, for Nigeria and the world,” he noted.
The initiative will end with a high-profile demo day, where top participants will showcase their AI-powered solutions to Google representatives and industry leaders. According to Kimani, this event will mark the start of many developers’ journey into global AI markets.
