Nigeria may soon see a new wave of classroom technology as the Federal Government considers a proposal to bring the KYAN smart class system into public schools. The idea gained momentum after Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed support for the Indian-designed tool during a meeting with Schoolnet India Limited and Learnet Skills Limited in Abuja.

The Vice President told the visiting delegation that the all-in-one solution could reshape basic education if adapted correctly for Nigerian pupils. He explained that the system, which blends a high-end computer, projector, camera and preloaded learning content, had already proved useful when he introduced it in Borno State years ago. He described the device as sturdy and simple enough for wide adoption in communities with limited infrastructure.

He said “The beauty of KYAN is that it is a very rugged machine. You can use one card to teach 70 students.” He also urged the developers to create a version that mirrors Nigeria’s curriculum, adding that language differences would require local customisation. According to him, “the Indian version of English is different from our own. Maybe you can use AI to customise it to our own local curriculum.

How the KYAN Model Could Fit Nigerian Schools

Officials from the Ministry of Education and the National Information Technology Development Agency will work with the Indian firms to refine the KYAN smart class for nationwide rollout. Shettima pointed to recent progress in states such as Edo and Enugu, where digital learning tools are already part of the school system. He said aligning these efforts with a unified model could strengthen teaching outcomes across the country.

Schoolnet India Limited’s Managing Director, R. C. M. Reddy, briefed the government on the product’s features. He said the tool turns any wall into a smart board and remains fully functional even without internet access because all materials are preloaded for primary and secondary levels. He explained that teachers in Borno State received training on the tool during Shettima’s tenure, and that it raised classroom confidence among educators.

Reddy said “It has an integrated projector and a high-end computer. It converts any wall into a smart board and has a camera. It comes preloaded with digital content for grades 1 to 10.”

He added that its design could help teachers perform better at every stage, noting that “a very good teacher can become a star teacher.”He gave assurances that Schoolnet would partner with federal and state institutions to ensure the KYAN smart class aligns with local needs, from busy urban schools to remote communities with weak connectivity.

Shettima reaffirmed the government’s commitment to using technology to bridge learning gaps and expand digital literacy across all levels. He emphasised that the goal is not only to deploy devices but to build a long-term ecosystem that supports teachers and encourages stronger learning outcomes.
