A Nigerian fintech is pushing payment boundaries with a new feature that lets people tip by simply taking a photo of a face — no bank details, no QR code, not even small talk.

Boldswitch, the fast-growing digital payments company, has rolled out FacePay, a tool aimed at making tipping and small transactions feel natural and effortless. Whether it’s a waiter, taxi driver, security guard, or online creator, users can send money instantly if the recipient has a Boldswitch account.

The idea came from an everyday moment — a customer wanted to reward excellent service but found no easy or discreet way to do so. FacePay steps in with facial recognition technology that matches a captured image to a registered account and transfers the tip on the spot.

FacePay is designed to make giving feel natural and human again,” said Glad Akhison, Boldswitch’s CEO. “It removes the awkwardness of asking for account details and makes spontaneous generosity effortless.”

Tipping Without the Awkwardness

To use FacePay, all that’s needed is the Boldswitch app and the latest update. Once active, the feature can process a tip in seconds — all while protecting the sender’s privacy. The system is encrypted, and no financial information changes hands.

But Boldswitch’s vision goes further. In the coming weeks, fintech plans to extend FacePay to physical stores. This would allow customers to make purchases by simply scanning their face, with no card, cash, or phone in sight.

The company says it is shaping a future where payments in Africa are not only mobile and secure but also deeply personal. For now, tipping has become quicker, simpler, and more human — one face at a time.

I am passionate about crafting stories, vibing to good music (and making some too), debating Nigeria’s political future like it’s the World Cup, and finding the perfect quiet spot to work and unwind.
