The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has launched its National E-Invoicing Solution, a system designed to block tax evasion and strengthen compliance. Businesses are now being warned not to conceal transactions as monitoring becomes faster, secure, and more transparent.
At a workshop in Lagos, FIRS officials explained that the new model replaces paper invoices with a digital standard that records every transaction detail. From supplier and buyer information to item prices and taxes, all data will now be validated and stored in real time. Each invoice will also carry a unique reference number for easy traceability.
Stronger Oversight, Less Room to Hide
Payment gateways are now required to report every transaction that passes through them. This means businesses will find it increasingly difficult to under-declare or avoid invoices.
The Tax Automation Department said onboarding would be gradual, with businesses given until 1st November 2025 to fully comply. Officials added that the extension was meant to allow firms to resolve integration issues and embrace voluntary compliance before enforcement begins.
FIRS has promised ongoing technical support for taxpayers. It also plans to decentralise assistance so local tax offices can resolve queries more quickly. Sixteen technology partners, including Interswitch, Remita, Etranzact International and Courteville Business Solutions, have been appointed to aid integration.
Officials stressed that the e-invoicing system is central to modernising Nigeria’s tax administration. By using automation and transparency, the agency hopes to boost revenue collection and cut down leakages in the economy.
