Tango Brook Technologies has teamed up with AfriGO, Nigeria’s domestic card scheme, to introduce the Tango Fuel Card. The smart card is designed to transform how fuel is purchased and tracked across the country.
The new system combines AfriGO’s locally developed payment infrastructure with Tango Brook’s fuel analytics platform. By doing so, it promises Nigerians a seamless cashless experience while giving individuals and businesses greater visibility into their fuel usage.
A Smarter Way to Buy Fuel
The Tango Fuel Card will be accepted at filling stations nationwide. Users can pay without cash, monitor consumption in real time, and track spending down to each vehicle or driver. With features such as PIN protection, transaction limits, and fraud controls, the card is also being promoted as a more secure option for fuel payments.
AfriGO, which is operated by Afrigopay Financial Services Limited under the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), supports the platform. Built to EMVCo standards, its infrastructure offers tokenised and contactless transactions with instant settlement for merchants. This ensures smoother cash flow for filling stations while maintaining high security.
“The Tango Fuel Card transforms fuel management by giving businesses and individuals real-time visibility into consumption, mileage, and spending,” said Obi Wemambu, Managing Director of Tango Brook Technologies. “With built-in rewards and nationwide acceptance, it offers unmatched flexibility, security, and convenience.”
Driving Digital Inclusion and Sovereignty
For AfriGO, the partnership aligns with Nigeria’s push to strengthen domestic payment systems. By processing transactions locally, the scheme reduces dependence on foreign card networks and lowers costs for both merchants and users. It also keeps financial data within the country, a key step towards digital sovereignty.
Afrigopay highlighted this benefit, stating that the partnership integrates “Tango’s innovative fuel tracking solution with AfriGO’s secure payment infrastructure. Together, we are driving transparency, efficiency, and digital inclusion in everyday fuel transactions.”
The Tango Fuel Card is expected to be useful not only for individuals and households but also for businesses managing vehicle fleets. With real-time analytics, fraud prevention, and budgeting tools, it promises to reshape how fuel is managed in Nigeria’s cashless economy.
