The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has trained 100 women in Zamfara State on digital skills to boost their role in Nigeria’s digital economy.
The three-day event, hosted at the Government House in Gusau, was designed to close the digital knowledge gap that leaves many women behind. In his keynote address, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, represented at the event, said that only 30 per cent of women in Nigeria have basic digital skills, compared to more than 50 per cent of men. He stressed that bridging this gap is essential for inclusive growth in the sector.
NCC: Building Women’s Capacity for the Digital Economy
According to the Head of Digital Skills and Services at NCC, the programme aligns with the federal government’s push for a stronger digital economy. She urged participants to look past barriers and embrace the opportunities digital literacy can bring. She also recognised the support of the Zamfara State government and other partners in making the training a success.
The Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Information Technology Development Agency welcomed the initiative, promising to monitor the progress of the trainees. The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, represented at the event, also praised the effort and called for deeper collaboration to advance digital opportunities for women.

Each participant received an android smartphone and a certificate of attendance. They were trained in areas such as cybersecurity, content creation, and digital marketing. Several women described the experience as eye-opening and said the skills would help them build careers and grow small businesses.
The NCC believes such initiatives will give women in rural areas the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital Nigeria.
