Bolt has introduced a digital dashboard camera system in Nigeria, giving drivers an extra layer of safety without buying expensive equipment. The ride-hailing firm is working with US-based Driver Technologies to turn smartphones into dash cams that can record both inside and outside the car.
The company confirmed that drivers will receive one month of free access to the premium Driver app before switching to a discounted plan at ₦4,810 ($3.50) per month. All recordings are saved in the cloud and can be retrieved when disputes, insurance claims or police investigations arise.
A Cheaper Way to Stay Protected
Many drivers had long demanded dash cams, but high costs made it difficult. “Driver partners regularly tell us that a dash cam can provide them with additional security and peace of mind,” said Osi Oguah, General Manager for Bolt Nigeria. “But buying a device that meets their requirements can be expensive, with drivers citing the cost as the main obstacle.”
The new system can run in the background while the Bolt app is in use. Its picture-in-picture function shows that recording is active without interfering with rides. Drivers can then share or access footage through the Driver Cloud when needed.
A Broader Push for Safety
Bolt said the launch builds on its existing safety tools like pick-up codes and Trusted Contacts. For Driver Technologies, the move marks an entry into emerging markets where hardware costs often limit access to modern safety features. The company will also provide technical support and data services to Nigerian drivers.
“By providing discounted access to premium dashcam functionality, our partnership with Driver Technologies ensures they can access the tools they need to create safer environments for themselves and their passengers,” Oguah added.
